تلبية لدعوة تلقاها من وزارة الشؤون الخارجية، قام الدكتور طه حسين برحلة إلى المغرب، زار خلالها مدينة الرباط، والدار البيضاء، ومراكش، وفاس، ومكناس، ولطنجة ، وتطوان. امتدت ضيافته من 24 يونيو إلى 6 يوليو 1958، استقبله المغاربة بحفاوة كبرى تقدير لمكانته العلمية، وإكبارا لإنجازاته البارزة في حقل الفكر والأدب العربيين. بعاصمة المملكة حظي طه حسين باستقبال رسمي بقاعة العرش من قبل صاحب الجلالة محمد الخامس -رحمه الله- الذي خاطبه بالعبارة التالية: «إننا والشعب المغربي نذكر دائما مواقفكم في أيام محنة المغرب، ودفاعكم المجيد عن قضيته، مما كان له أكبر التشجيع لنا على المضي في كفاحنا إلى النصر...»
