في هذه الرواية، كما في رواية الحرب والسلم، يبدو أن تولستوي بقدر ما يقدر صفات البطولة ويرفض الظلم، فهو يعارض فكرة الفناء من أجل المجد. ولذلك هو يرسم نهاية غير مجيدة لذلك البطل النموذج. وكما هو الحال في معظم أعماله يقدم صورة عن مجمل التاريخ الروسي المليء بالحروب والمؤامرات والخيانات، والمعاناة أيضا. إنما يبقى محور هذه الرواية هي حياة تلك الشخصية، الحاج مراد، التي صورها بطريقة جذابة محببة، وحياة أهل القفقاس القاسية والظلم الذي يتعرضون له. على الرغم من صغر حجمها، فقد اعتبرت قصة \"الحاج مراد\" كإحدى أجمل روائع تولستوي، ولقيت إقبالا واسعا من القراء، حتى أنها تركت تأثيرا على غاندي في فكرة المقاومة السلمية، وقال عنها الفيلسوف المعروف \"فيتغنشتاين\" الذي كان معجبا بها : \"إنها تمتلك برود، ووضوح العمل المتأخر\".
