\" هامنت \" رواية مؤثرة تستقي مادتها من قصة غير مطروقة في حياة شكسبير في القرن السادس عشر. قصة موت ابنه هامنت في الحادية عشرة من عمره، وعلى إثره كتب رائعته المأسوية \"هاملت\". تبدأ لغة السرد بسيطة وقصيرة الجمل كأنها تحكى لطفل، ثم تتعقد مع تعقيد الأحداث وتصاعدها وتشابك علاقات الشخصيات بعضها ببعض. اللغة شائقة وشفافة أشبه بحلم ينسج، وهي قريبة إلى روح عصرنا لا تنغمس في معجم مفردات قديمة من القرن السادس عشر إلا عند الضرورة. \"علاقة أوفارل باللغة علاقة لحنية. ثمة إيقاع شعري في كتابتها وغنى في وصفها العالم الطبيعي، إذ يمكننا شم رائحة الجلود المختلفة في معمل صانع القفافيز، وأريج التفاح المستقر في رفوف المخزن الشتوي التي يبعد بعضها عن بعضها الآخر بمقدار عرض إصبع. وإذ يتكشف الكتاب صفحة صفحة فإنه يحمل القصة إلى خاتمة مجللة بالرفق ومفعمة بالأمل: فحتى أعظم الأحزان، وأشد العلاقات الزوجية تضررا، وأكثر القلوب انكسارا، قد تحظى بشيء من العزاء، بشيء من الشفاء.\"
