يتناول كتاب \"تذكرة الأولياء\" من سبعة وتسعين فصلا خص كل فصل واحد من كبار الأولياء وقد بدأ العطار الكتاب بترجمة الإمام جعفر الصادق، وختمه بالإمام محمد الباقر تبركا ويبدو أن العطار كان قد عقد النية في بادئ أمره على ان يترجم لإثنين وسبعين وليا فقط، وجمل وطريقة العطار في تأليفه هذا الكتاب أنه يبدأ كل ترجمة بعدة جمل مسجعة في مدح المترجم، تبين مكانته بين رجال التصوف، ثم يبدأ بذكر بعض أخباره، ثم يسرد ما نسب إليه من أقوال، ثم ينتقل إلى الحديث عن وفاته وكراماته عند الموت، ثم الدعاء له بالمغفرة والرحمة.
