تدور أحداث الرواية كان الرجال يتقدمون في سيرهم صامتين وسمعت أصوات طلقات المدافع الرشاشة من موقع قريب وعند مفترق الطرق طلب منهم ساليفينكو أن يوقفوا السيارة، فقد كان الطريق يتجه من هذه النقطة جهة اليمين حيث توجد هيئة قيادة الكتيبة وقفز الرجل من السيارة وودعهم، ثم اتجه إلى المكان الذي كانت تأتي منه أصوات الطلقات على نحو أكثر عنفا واستمرارا \"الربيع على ضفاف \"الأودر\" هي القصة الرائعة التي حلق فيها المؤلف بقلبه، فبلغ الذروة ورسم أدق المشاعر الإنسانية وأبشع مآسي الحرب وويلاتها، فاستحقت لهذا جائزة \"ستالين\" فى الأدب.
