بين الواقع والخيال تدور أحداث رواية الطربوش ليجسد روبير سوليه من خلالها حكاية الانتماء الضائع، المشهد الأول في هذه الأحداث يتحرك عن شخصية ميشال بطركاني الذاهب إلى مدرسته والواقف أمام السلطان في المدرسة اليسوعية يلقي بانفعال بالغ قصيدة الشاعر الفرنسي جان لافونتين، هذه الحادثة تستأثر بمشاعر التلميذ في حينها لتظل هذه الحادثة بظلالها اللطيفة مأثرة في نفس شارل وتصوراته حتى في أحلك الأزمات والتي لاحت في نهاية الرواية عندما أصبح وجود هذه العائلة في مصر مهدد لأن ضباط يعتمرون القبعات سيتولون السلطة عما قليل، فتسقط موضة الطربوش تحل نهاية عالم وتكون لـ \"سوريي\" مصر، بداية مؤلمة لهجرات أخرى.
