يقدم الكتاب، الذي ترجمه إلى العربية الكاتب والسيناريست مصطفى محرم، دراسة علمية منهجية عن فن الكوميديا، منذ الكوميديا اليونانية القديمة وتطور هذا الفن على ثلاث مراحل، وهي العصر القديم والعصر الوسيط، والعصر الحديث، إلى أن اخترعت السينما، واستعراض أعلام كتاب المسرحية الكوميدية ثم انتقال المسرحية بنوعيها التراجيديا والكوميديا إلى المسرح الروماني، ثم التوقف لظروف دينية، حين ظهر الدين المسيحي وسيطر رجال الدين على مقتضيات الأمور وانشغال الناس في أوروبا، إلى أن جاء عصر النهضة وانتعشت الآداب والفنون في القرن الرابع عشر والخامس عشر والسادس عشر.
