مدينة الظلال أحدى مدن مملكة الحروف، يسرد الجد ضاد قصصه على أحفاده كل يوم، على الحصير المفرش في حوش البيت متنقلا بهم بين التورية والتصريح مستعين بالحروف وظلالها وبجداول اللغة وأدواتها، متنقلا بهم بين استقامتها والتوائها، ويناور بهم بين انحناءتها والتفافها. ويخرج بهم أحيانا بصعوبة بالغة من بين دوائرها، ويتسلق بهم بصعوبة في مسارات الحروف الصاعدة، وينجرفوا بسرعة حين تصادفوا الحروف المنحدرة، ويركب بهم أحيانا الحروف المنبسطة ويبحر بهم في بحر ذكرياته المتراكمة التي تحركها أمواج البحر، فيمخض امعائه ويلعب بفصوص دماغه ليفرغ ما في جوفه في سجلات أحفاده الفارغة. تشاطره في بعض الأحاين في سرد الأحاديث وتلاوة الخطب للأحفاد زوجته الجده همزه التي مازالت يحتفظ ببعض قواها العضلية والذهنية، التي تمكنها من تتبع مسارات الحوارات الخارجية، وتتقصى مالاتها، وتقطف من القطوف الدانية بعضا من الدرر البهية والحكايات النورانية، وتتلقف من أفواه العابرون أخبار الأمكنة، ومن الجالسون بعضا من عبر الأزمنة.
