عاصر عبد الرحمن الشهبندر (١٨٧٩-١٩٤٠)، شاهدا ومشاركا، مرحلة تاريخية مفصلية في حياة المجتمع والثقافة العربية الحديثة، بل وربما يمكن القول أنه يمثل أحد المساهمين في هذه المرحلة. مثلما هو أحد دلائلها وشهودها، وربما شهداؤها، فالشهبندر المولود عام ١٨٧٩ والمقتول غيلة عام ١٩٤٠ مثل كل ما تنطوي هذه المرحلة الهامة المتصلة ما بين مولده واغتياله من أفكار وحوادث كانت نمور في مجتمع وثقافة كانا ينهضان آنذاك، ويحاولان التخلص من نير الأتراك والقرون الوسطى، ولكن ليقعا تحت السيطرة الأوروبية-الإنكليزية-الفرنسية، وتلك هي مفارقة الشهبندر وجيله، بل ومرحلته، ربما تلك هي مأساة هذه المرحلة العربية التي ما نزال تعيش تداعياتها وامتداداتها. وربما كان الدكتور عبد الرحمن الشهبندر أحد أبرز ممثلي التيار العلمي والعلماني، بل والجذري في الحركة الفكرية والسياسية العربية في جيله ومرحلته، وربما كان امتياز الشهبندر يكمن في ربطه الفكر بالممارسة، والمعرفة بالسياسة، والقول بالعمل.
