ساهمت (مؤتمرات كامبردج حول التنمية) بجمع مديرين وإخصائيين فنيين من حقول كثيرة متباينة، لكي يفحصوا مشكلة بعينها هي استراتيجية التنمية في العالم الثالث وبقيت هذه المؤتمرات تنعقد سنويا طوال العقد الماضي. وهذا الكتاب يختار من البحوث المقدمة أكثرها أهمية، ويقدمها مساهمة منه في البحث عن كيف يمكن التخطيط للتنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية، و كيف يمكن تنفيذ الخطط وتتخلل البحوث الفنية خلاصات وتعليقات كتبها «رونالد روبنسون» ملخصا فيها الموضوعات والآراء المتباينة التي تناولت أبرز مشكلات التنمية.
