تصنف هذه الرواية ضمن أدب الحرب لأن أحداثها تدور في زمن احتلال الجيش الألماني لأوكرانيا خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى لتصور حياة الناس العاديين ومعاناتهم وتحلل شخصيات من خانوا وطنهم ووقفوا مع المحتل، الرواية تتخذ من مدينة أوكرانية لم يسمها بولغاكوف مسرحا لأحداثها حيث تحاول أوكرانيا الانفصال عن الإمبراطورية الروسية القيصرية قبل أن تقوم الثورة الإشتراكية في روسيا سنة 1917 لتصبح البلاد جبهة حرب مشتعلة بين جيوش ألمانية وروسية وأوكرانية تؤيد الثورة الاشتراكية أو تقف ضدها، ويصف بولغاكوف بدقة أحاسيس الجنود وهم يخوضون الحرب وتعاضدهم مع بعضهم ومرارة انتظار الموت وصراع الشجاعة مع غريزة البقاء ولحظات التأمل الطويل عند السكون وإدراك عبثية القتال.
