في روايته \"تلك العتمة الباهرة\" يجري الطاهر بنجلون محاكمة روائية للنظام السياسي العربي، ويفكك في روايته الكثير من آليات القمع السياسي والاجتماعي في بلاده، وهو يفعل ذلك من خلال أحداث واقعية مستلهمة من شهادة أحد معتقلي سجن \"تزمامارت\" الذي أمضى عشرين عاما في هذا المعتقل. تحكي الرواية أحداثا واقعية على لسان السجين (عزيز) الشخصية الرئيسية في العمل، وأخرى مكملة. هم مجموعة من العسكريين الذين تورطوا أو اتهموا بتنفيذ محاولة إنقلاب الصخيرات على الملك السحن الثاني في عام 1971. قام أحد القادة العسكريين الكبار باقتياد السجناء نحو قصر الصخيرات الملكي، رغم أن المعلومة التي خرجوا من أجلها من أجل المشاركة في مناورة عسكرية فقط، وكان ذلك في 10 يوليو 1971م.
