يسرد باموك الرواية في فصول قصيرة ويحمل كل منها عنوان رئيسي واخر فرعي مشتقان من حوارات الفصل ذاته. اورهان باموك نفسه شخصية تتدخل في بعض اجزاء الرواية بصفته صديق البطل وهو يجري بحثا عن ايام صديقه كا في قارص. تبدأ القصة بطيئة وما تلبث الاحداث ان تتصاعد وتتزايد الاثارة فيها، وتشعر مع تطور القصة ان هناك المزيد من المفاجآت في كل فصل. باموك قادر على الاحتفاظ باهتمامي في هذه القصة حتى النهاية، القصة: تحمل جانبا عاطفيا من خلال قصة حب كا ل ايبك. وتحمل جانبا بوليسيا والغازا من قبيل التحقيق في استشراء حالات الانتحار بين فتيات قارص، جريمة قتل، ضياع دفتر اشعار كا، وهل كان كا مذنبا بالبلاغ عن كحلي (بلو). وهي تحمل جانبا سياسيا باثارتها لجوانب الصراع بين الاسلاميين والعلمانيين واقليات الاكراد والارمن الذين يريد كل منهم ان يكون له صوت ورأي.
