في مدينة خيالية تدعى ماهاجوني، أسس المحتالون مجتمعا فاسدا يديره المال ويكرس الفساد تحت شعار \"كل شيء مباح، يستخدم بريخت نقدا اجتماعيا حادا يستكشف انهيار القيم الإنسانية أمام الرأسمالية المتوحشة في قمة السخرية، يحاكم الفقير باول للموت لعدم امتلاكه المال، بينما تجسد الأغاني مثل \"ألاباما\" نقدا سياسيا بصريا مميزا، تعد المسرحية تحذيرا من هيمنة النظام المالي على الإنسانية والمجتمع، رأى بعض النقاد المسرحية نقدا للمجتمع الأمريكي، بينما اعتبرها آخرون نقدا لجمهورية فايمار الفوضوية وغير الأخلاقية، وخاصة برلين في عشرينيات القرن الماضي، بما شهدته من استشراء الدعارة، وعدم استقرار الحكومة، والفساد السياسي، والأزمات الاقتصادية.
