في يوم ممطر، في مدينة متخيلة ربما كانت مثلاً في البرتغال، يحجم المقترعون عن التوجه إلى صناديق الاقتراع حتى الساعة الرابعة بعد الظهر. ثم يصلون جميعاً في الوقت نفسه. وعند إحصاء الأصوات يتبين أن نحو ثلاثة أرباع المقترعين وضعوا في الصناديق أوراقاً بيضاء. وبعد أسبوع من حالة ذعر تسيطر على الحكومة تجري عملية الاقتراع مرة أخرى في يوم مشمس فتأتي النتجية صادمة حيث يلقي ثلاثة وثمانون في المائة من الناخبين بأوراقهم بيضاء. إن \"بصيرة\" \"ساراماجو\" تحول سياسة القمع إلى سخرية لاذعة تفضح الديمقراطية التي تستهدف الفوز بأساليب ملتوية وتكاد تكون رواية \"البصيرة\" هي وجه العملة الآخر لروايته السابقة \"العمى\" التي يتخيل فيها أن مدينة مهجورة في بلد مجهول يصعقها وباء غريب هو فقدان بصر الجميع ماعدا امرأة واحدة ظلت الشاهد الوحيد على هذه الكارثة.
