يميِز هذا الكتاب رصدُه لكثير من أنواع السلوك البشري التي لا نلقي لها بالًا، لكنها تكشف ربما أكثر من غيرها عن طبيعة اللاشعور الذي يوجِّه تلك الأنواع من السلوك وغيرها. وتكفي نظرة واحدة إلى مراجع هذا الكتاب لتكشف عن مدى التقدُّم الهائل الذي ينجزه البحث العلمي عن الدماغ البشري في مراكز البحث النفسية والأحيائية في العالم. وتبدو الجهود أوضح ما تكون في استقصاء التصرفات الإنسانية التي نقوم بها كل ثانية من حياتنا من غير أن نشعر. والمحرِك لتلك التصرفات كلها هو الدماغ. حقَّق هذا الكتاب حضورًا لافتًا في الدوائر العلمية في العالم فور نشره بلغته الإنكليزية. وتُرجم إلى أكثر من عشرين لغة، وصار موضوعًا للحوار في الدوريات العلمية وفي الصحف العالمية. وممّا يدل على هذه الأهمية أنه ظلَّ على قائمة صحيفة نيويورك تايمز الأميركية لأكثر الكتب مبيعًا على مدى أربعة عشر شهرا.
