الكتاب دراسة ميدانية تخوض أساسا في علم الإنسان وعلم الاجتماع قام بها الباحث الى العتبات الشيعية المقدسة في العراق بين عامي (2011-2012). وتمت الاستفادة أيضا من مناهج علم النفس والتأريخ والأدب من أجل دراسة هذه الطقوس بصورة أفضل. وشملت الدراسة الميدانية مدن بغداد والكاظمية وكربلاء والنجف، ومركزة على وجه الخصوص، على دراسة أيام عاشوراء وزيارة الأربعين في شهري محرم وصفر في كربلاء من تلك السنة. يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى دراسةِ جانب من جوانب بناء المجتمع الشيعي العراقي من خلال تطوّر ممارسته لطقوس الحداد في مناسبتي عاشوراء والأربعين. ولهذه الطقوس وظيفة مهمة في بناء المجتمع الشيعي العراقي من خلال تبنّي دور التجربة الدينية وتحوله إلى بنية اجتماعية-ثقافية.
