يشتمل هذا الكتاب على عدد من الموضوعات حول مفهوم التجديد ودواعيه وخطواته، ينقسم الكتاب بعد ذلك إلى 10 فصول، أهمها الفصلان الأوليان بعنوان : \"القول الأساس في الفكر الإسلامي\" و\"التجديد المعاصر في العلوم الإسلامية\" وبقية الفصول بعدهما تعقيب على صور ونماذج تطبيقية لتيارات التجديد المنسوبة للفكر الإسلامي. ثم يعرض لتاريخ الاجتهاد وبوادر تجديد الفكر الديني، التي بدأت من عصر النبوة، لكن اتساعه وتقنينه كآلية مستدامة للاجتهاد كان بعد وفاة المصطفى عليه السلام، الذي هدى المسلمين للاشتغال بجمع موارد الديانة وضبطها، فاشتغل فقهاء الصحابة بالاجتهاد في الفروع وعني أئمة الفقه بتأصيله في أدوات القياس والاستدلال وغيرها من علم أصول الفقه.
