يتناول كتاب (أوديب وأساطيره) التصدي للنظرة السائدة عن هذه الأسطورة، وتخصيصا في التحليل النفسي. ووضح الكتاب أن هذه النظرة اختزلت الأسطورة وشوهتها، وقد سعى بدقة وذكاء، إلى إعادة أوديب إلى حقيقة ما هو عليه : أوديب بلا \"عقدة\". واعتمدت فصول الكتاب على التحليل لمسرحيتي سوفوكليس : أوديب الملك، وأوديب في كولون. وقد انطلق من وجهة نظر تاريخية، ليشرح نص أدبيا الشاعر الذي عاش في أثينا إبان القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد، آخذ بالاعتبار حقائق ومفاهيم مألوفة لدى أهل ذلك الزمن.
