يأخذنا أورهان باموق إلى مدينة ضئيلة على حتى الآن ثلاثين جاهزية من إسطنبول فيعود بنا إلى الفائت القريب في ثمانينيات القرن العشرين حيث الانقلابات والأحداث السياسية المشتعلة، عن طريق رابطة حفار آبار ومساعدە الضئيل. في \"ذات الشعر الأحمر\" يفتش البطل عن بديل للأب الذي اختفى، فتتطور علاقته مع حفار الآبار قبل أن يتعرض لحادث يغير من عمره تماما في أعقاب لقائه بذات الشعر الأحمر. وحين يشكو إليها خسارة الوالد تجابهه بقولها \"عليك أن تجد لنفسك أبا غيرە. فكل شخص هنا في ذاك الجمهورية له زيادة عن والد، مثل الجمهورية الوالد، الوالد المقدس، الباشا الوالد، أبو المافيا .. هنا لا واحد من يمكنه الاستمرار في العيش بدون والد.
