من المعروف أن الأفراد ذوي صعوبات التعلم لديهم انطباع سلبي عن الذات، فهم يشعرون بعدم الأمان، لتدني مستوى ويتبنون نظرة سلبية عن أنفسهم لعدم تعاملهم مع الأمور الحياتية بكفاءة، ونظرا التحصيل لديهم، وإخفاقهم الأكاديمي، ووجود صعوبات في تكوين علاقات اجتماعية، وشعورهم بهذا الإخفاق والإحباط، كل هذه الأمور، تؤدي إلى انخفاض مستوى احترام وتقدير الذات لديهم. ومن جهة د أخرى، يعاني هؤلاء الأفراد من عدم التقدير والتشجيع من قبل الآخرين، ويشعرون بالرفض، وهذا يول باليـأس، والإخفاق وفقدان الأمل بالمستقبل، وكل هذا يؤثر سلبا في مفهوم الذات الأكاديمي لديهم شعورا لديهم في المدرسة والمنزل، وعليه، فإن المشكلات الاجتماعية والانفعالية والسلوكية هي نتيجة حتمية للإحباط المستمر الناتج عن عدم قدرة الطفل على القيام بالمتطلبات الأكاديمية وإخفاقه المستمر في التحصيل.
