يتحدث الكتاب عن الدور الاقتصادي لمدينة طرابلس كحلقة وصل بين أوروبا وإفريقيا حيث إن النشاط التجاري بطرابلس كان يقوم به التجار اليهود والمسيحيين الذين كان عليهم القيام بدفع الرسوم الجمركية على الأصناف التجارية من السلع المصدرة والموردة وليس على الذين يشترونه من العرب إلا أن يدفعوا قدرا ضئيلا إلى قائد البحرية الذي كان يسمح بتصديره خلسة في بعض الأحيان فمدينة طرابلس مدينة ساحلية متوسطة اكتسبت أهميتها التجارية من موقعها الاستراتيجي الذي يتوسط الساحل الأفريقي للبحر المتوسط، ولا يفصلها عن المراكز التجارية الجنوبية أي معوقات طبيعية .
