يقول الأديب شفيق جبري في كتابه هذا كتب لي أن أرحل إلى أميركا رحلتين الأولى سنة 1953 والثانية سنة 1956 ولقد جلت في مناكب أرضها من الشرق إلى الغرب ومن الشمال إلى الجنوب فنعمت بكثير من مشاهد طبيعتها وأنست بكثير من جامعاتها ووقفت على خصائص الأميركان في آفاق تفكيرهم واجتماعهم وعملهم واطلعت على طائفة من مجهوداتهم في مقاومة الطبيعة بعد مقاومة الهنود وكنت أدون كل يوم ما توحيه إلي هذه الأمور حتى نشأ هذا الكتاب الذي سميته أرض السحر وشرحت في بعض فصوله السبب في هذه التسمية فإذا استطاع القارئ الكريم أن يرى في تضاعيفه ما أبقته الرحلة في نفسي من مختلف الآثار التي أعربت عنها جريا على الطبع وحده وبعدا عن أي تكلف وإيثارا لكل تجرد فقد ظفرت بما أردت.
