ينبسط كتاب نظرية الأدب للناقد البريطاني تيري إيغلتون الذي نقله إلى العربية المترجم ثائر الديب في مدخل وخمسة مفاصل وخاتمة، وكان السؤال الذي يبئر الأطروحة العامة للكاتب، هو سؤال: ما النظرية؟ ولقد حاول الناقد تكشف وملامسة ذلك انطلاقا من تاريخ الأدب في مساراته المتعددة لا سيما أن النظرية تتسم دائما بالترحال والتحول تبعا لدورة الحياة وسيرورة الفكر الإنساني إن الكتاب ينزع نحو تبسيط المفاهيم المتصلة بالنظرية، وبالممارسات الأدبية بشكل عام إضافة إلى محاولات فهم الظاهرة الأدبية من خلال ضبط المفهوم، وإن كان ذلك غير متحقق نظرا لتشعب الممارسة الأدبية واشتباكها مع شواغل معرفية أخرى، ومهما حاولنا التدقيق في المفهوم، فإننا في النهاية، سنتحصل على مفاهيم عائمة وملتبسة، والشأن ذاته مع النظرية وآفاق استقبالها وتمثلها في الأدب.
