هذه الرواية تروي قصة من المجتمع الريفي الياباني، حيث نتابع، بلهفة وتشوق الحياة اليومية لعائلة لها ربها وأعضاؤها وأبطالها : ياكيشي، الوالد المتمتع بحقوق السلطة وايتسوكو، المرأة الشابة الحسناء التي تتلهف إلى لحظة حب وزوجها الذي يفضل عليها عشيقاته وحبيبها، من جانب واحد، الخادم الوسيم سابورو وعشيقته الخادمة الحسناء ميو وأهم ما في هذه الرواية خطان صاعدان : خط يذكرنا بالمأساة \"اليونانية\" الملحمية والدرامية، فالدراما في هذه الرواية تهددنا وفي كل لحظة من تطورها، بالنهاية الفاجعة لحب الصبية الحسناء ايسوكو وخط آخر تتفتح فيه مصائر أبطال الرواية بهدوء وثقة، كأنما عبر عدسة سحرية.
