تتناول هذه المسرحية حالة العصيان المدني الاول في التاريخ الاميركي وربما الاكثر شهرة -رفض ثورو دفع ضريبة الرؤوس، وهي ضريبة تفرض على كل شخص بالغ- في عام 1846 والليلة التي امضاها ثورو في السجن بسبب هذا الرفض ويمثل مشهد السجن اطارا عاما لتلك الفترات المملوءة بالاحداث من حياة ثورو، من علاقته بالشاعر \"امرسون\"، إلى اعتكافه للتأمل على ضفاف بحيرة والدن، وقضية حبه غير الموفق.
