ينقسم هذا الكتاب في ثلاثة أجزاء موسوعية والجزء الأول من الكتاب يقدم تحليلا لعملية التحول الكبيرة وطويلة الأمد التي رافقت أسلمة المناطق التي أسماها العرب \"الهند\"، بينما يعالج الجزء الثاني الفتح الإسلامي في الحقبة ما بين القرنين الحادي عشر والثالث عشر الميلادي، حيث يقدم تحليلا للأشكال التنظيمية المستجدة في الدولة الهندية المسلمة، أما الجزء الثالث للدراسة فيمضي مصطحبا القارئ في رحلة تبدأ من غزوات المغول إلى حقبة العصور الوسطى وبواكير العصور الحديثة في أواخر القرن الخامس عشر ومطالع القرن السادس عشر.
