نحن مع مصرع ألماس لسنا في رواية حديثة فقط، بل في ملحمة شعبية أيضا، يتوالى أبطالها منذ عنترة بن شداد إلى اليوم. الرجال يتحلون بشهامة وشجاعة ورجولة تجعل من كل واحد فيهم حارسا للأخلاق وحاكما ينفذ مشيئته مهما جرت عليه أحكامه من مصائب. أما النساء فهن، كما في ملحمة شعبية منذ عبلة بنت مالك إلى اليوم، فاتنات غاويات عاشقات يندفعن بغريزتهن إلى الموت ذبحا، كما تتهاوى الفراشات أمام المصباح. هذه العدالة البدائية الغريبة تنتحر مرتين عبر زوج عاجز يحب زوجته إلى حد أنه يقبل بخيانتها له وينتحر حين تذبح، وعبر أب بأمر بقتل أبنته العاشقة ثم يقتل صديقه حسرة وندامة. إن ياسين رفاعية يقدم لنا جوا اسطوريا وواقعيا، عابقا بالجنس والجريمة والحب المكتوم. جوا مختلفا تمام الاختلاف عما صوره في رواياته السابقة.
