تدور أحداث القصة في مجتمع مغلق تبخل عليه الأرض بالقوت فيلجأ إلى سن قوانينه وأخلاقه الخاصة والملائمة لندرة الغذا فيبدو المبدأ الأخلاقي قاسيا بل متوحشا للوهلة الأولى لكنه يتضمن أعلى مراتب الفضيلة إلى جانب البشاعة وتلوح فكرة البوذية الأساسية وهي عقيدة \"الكارمان\" التي تقول بأن \"الأفعال تتبع صاحبها وتصنعه\" في مصير شخصيات \"ناراياما\".
