تدور أحداثها في بلدة قارص التركية، تاريخ البلدة المضطرب -والتي كانت في كل فترة تحت إمرة دولة-جعلها تحتوي العديد من الفئات والقوميات مثل الأرمن والأكراد والشركس والأتراك، يعيشون جميعا بقرية نائية وادعة نسيها الزمن، إلى أن بدأ الانتحار بين الفتيات المحجبات ينتشر في البلدة. تتناول الرواية العديد من الأفكار من وجهة نظر ملحد يشعر بوجود رب مختلف عما ينادي به الجميع، يتطرق الكاتب لمفهوم الإسلام السياسي، الجماعات الإسلامية الممولة من إيران، محاولات الشعب للبحث عن هوية ما بين القوميين والإسلاميين، الحجاب في تركيا وما تتعرض له الفتاة التركية من تجاذب بين دولة تمنعه ودين يأمر به، الحياة البسيطة في بلدة قارص والفقر والجهل، يتحدث عن الهوية التركية وما يشعر به التركي قبالة أمم أخرى وهنا يبدو الحلم الأوروبي لامعا في أعين البعض منتقدا من قبل آخرين.
