Overview
Recent years have seen an increasing interest in human rights, especially women's rights, as they play a significant role in the field of social development, representing half of society. The actual start of their involvement in political action was through political participation in elected councils. This was enshrined by the Algerian legislator in successive legislations, where the focus shifted from a male representation system to the idea of promoting women's rights after joining international treaties. Subsequently, the principle of equality in rights was adopted. The 1996 Constitution, amended in 2008, aimed to remove obstacles to women's participation in the political field through Article 31, which introduced a quota system. This was reinforced by the 2016 Constitution and the Organic Law 12/03, which specified the methods for expanding women's representation in elected councils by imposing a quota system and gender parity in political life, as well as the constitutional amendment of 2020.
