تتناول هذه المقالة سؤال: \"ما الغاية من وجود المدارس؟\" وتُحاج عن أن كل جيل ملزم بالإجابة عنه بنفسه؛ وتبين أن للمدارس في المجتمعات الحديثة مهمة متميزة، وهي تمكين النشء من المفاهيم التي تجعلهم قادرين على تجاوز حدود تجربتهم بطرق ربما لا تكون متاحة لهم في أسرهم ومجتمعاتهم؛ وتقدم أيضا منظورًا بديلًا للسياسات التعليمية التي ترى المدارس، في المقام الأول، أدوات للسياسات الاقتصادية؛ كما أنها تشكك في متن كثير من العلوم الاجتماعية التي تحصر دور المدارس في إعادة الإنتاج الثقافي والاجتماعي.
