Overview
This article attempts to investigate the main character's estrangement while pursuing happiness on the moon in Bishop F. Godwin's The Man in the Moone (1638). In his narrative, Godwin provided the possibility of exploring an alternative reality as a resolution to the individual's miseries, suffering, and existential questions. Also, he resists and challenges the current conditions that hinder an individual's happiness and encourages the reader to question the dominant religious and political institutions by exploring a better civilization on the moon. This article applies Marxist principles particularly the concepts of the economic base and superstructure base to examine how the economic condition effectively is at play to shape the social, cultural, religious and political ideologies that contribute to individual happiness in Godwin's narrative The Man in the Moone. More explicitly, the article related achieving true happiness, liberation and meaningful life to justice and equality in the distribution of wealth through a non-exploitative economic system. Furthermore, the impact of exploring this new world profoundly changes and transforms the role and the duty of the main character who seeks for social changes leading him to be in conflict with the practice of earthly society. Finally, the article concluded that finding the happiness leading to the character's estrangement as he found individuals' liberation equated to the Marxist perspective of non-exploitative economic systems.
