Overview
A hundred years ago, Hartzenbusch, one of those crotchety nineteenth-century scholars-Durán, Gayangos, Usoz-to whom we owe so much and whom we revere so little, included in his edition of Moratín's Obras póstumas respectably purged extracts from the diary whose complete text is now published at last by R. and M. Andioc. Despite their proper strictures on Hartzenbusch's occasional misunderstanding of the diary and his editorial prudishness, after scrutiny of the whole work, one cannot disagree greatly with his judgement of its value: 'Si ... hubiera particularizado más [sus ordinarias ocupaciones], si hubiera dicho algo de sus estudios y sus escritos, de su vida íntima en fin, sería éste un repertorio de noticias inestimable; pero, según lo hizo, sirve de poco. ... siendo mucha la extensión, la sustancia es poca; ... ' (OP, III, 409-10 and 411).
