Overview
In women with early breast cancer, adjuvant therapy with epirubicin plus the standard combination of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil (CMF) was shown to improve both relapse-free and overall survival, as compared with the standard CMF regimen alone.

The National Epirubicin Adjuvant Trial (NEAT) and the BR9601 trial were designed jointly by English and Scottish investigators in 1994 and 1995 to determine the value of anthracyclines in the adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer. At that time, a combination of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil was standard treatment for early breast cancer in the United Kingdom. The role of anthracyclines had not been addressed in the 1990 Oxford Overview of the treatment of early breast cancer,
