Overview
A Nyugatrómai birodalom megszűntével átalakult Európa térképe. A korábbi nagy birodalmak helyébe kisebb királyságok léptek. Ezen új államokat a korábban hun alattvaló vagy római szolgálatban levő germán népek alapították. Az államszervezés mellett ezek az új hatalmak időről időre háborúkat vívtak egymás ellen, hogy területüket és politikai befolyásukat kiterjesszék. A korszak két nagyhatalma, a Frank és a Langobárd Királyság, többször keveredett egymással fegyveres konfliktusba, amelyet mindkét fél más katonai elképzelések mentén vívott meg.
