Consumer spending on durables and services in the 1980's
1992
Overview
Consumer spending on durable goods and services increased between 1980 and 1990. Expenditures on goods and services that saved time and those related to entertainment increased dramatically. Some 72% of households owned a microwave oven in 1990, 58% owned electronic sound equipment and 61% owned videocassette recorders and video disk players. The services for which expenditures increased included cable television and health maintenance plans. The increasing participation of women in the work force contributed to much of the increase in spending.
