Overview
The technology mechanism that is the most important part of a groupware solution is workflow. As a discipline, technology, and management tool, workflow provides the foundation for far-flung change in the way people work. Workflow automates the steps that go into a business process by capturing the rules, routing instructions, and roles required to perform work. Workflow closes time intervals by eliminating the inherent transfer times in routing information and work from one person to another. Workflow goes beyond groupware alone by using sophisticated mechanisms to route the work and deliver it in the fastest possible period of time. A profound effect of workflow has to do with the fact that it will significantly change the nature of global communications.
