Lived Experiences of Men Living With HIV Undergoing Antiretroviral Treatment In the Philippines

Overview
Many newly diagnosed individuals were reported to the HIV/AIDS & ART Registry of the Philippines in February 2022. Antiretroviral treatment (ART), comprising a daily regimen of medications, has substantially converted Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) into a manageable condition by lowering viral loads to undetectable levels. However, adherence remains a significant challenge for many patients. This qualitative study utilized interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the experiences of eight Filipino men aged 21-34 living with HIV and undergoing ART. Three primary themes emerged: \"Facing the Unknown\" chronicles their journey with HIV and its pervasive impact across various facets of their lives. \"Stepping Back in the Closet\" addresses the contextual pressures that compel secrecy about their condition. \"Holding on to a Dose of Hope\" illuminates their strategies for navigating new directions and sustaining optimism through adherence to ART. This study's themes can inform support strategies for individuals living with HIV, offering insights to organizations and mental health professionals. It provides an understanding of the challenges and experiences of people living with HIV and undergoing ART as a possible resource for developing mental health and psychosocial support programs and interventions. This knowledge is particularly valuable for newly diagnosed individuals and those grappling with adherence issues, aiming to enhance the effectiveness and accessibility of HIV care and support services.
