Overview
TECHNICAL PAPERS REPORTING ORIGINAL RESEARCH RESULTS have appeared in periodicals and proceedings for over 300 years now. The modern research paper conforms to certain conventions regarding overall organization, use of rhetorical devices, level of technical detail, references to other work, etc. These conventions began to appear in papers of the 19th century — at the same time that specialized periodicals and proceedings were proliferating and the practice of science was becoming a regular profession rather than an avocation. This article discusses the origins of the specialized literature and the evolution of the research paper.
