Overview
The United Nations has identified access to justice as a priority sustainable development goal. Social justice - involving equity, rights, participation and access - should be available and meaningful to all people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, class, sexuality, age, ability and place. Yet, more than three decades of neoliberal social policy in most 'Western', largely anglophone, capitalist countries has increasingly eroded the social infrastructure and support system once provided by the welfare state. This has also redefined market values by including excessive individualism, fierce competition and profit-making as the trademarks of 'developed' countries that the rest of the world is expected to emulate. These changes create massive inequality, injustice and widespread social problems (Morley et al. 2019), as many of the articles in this special edition highlight.
