تسعى هذه الدراسة إلى بيان إشكالية مفهوم الاستشراق بشقيه الكلاسيكي والجديد وتحديد مفهومه الخاص -دراسة الإسلام من غير المسلمين-وكيف ساعدت هجمات 11 سبتمبر 2001 في الولايات الأمريكية وغيرها من الأسباب في إعادة انبعاث الدراسات الاستشراقية من جديد لكن بأدوات فكرية مختلفة تعتمد على الاستفادة من التطور في مناهج العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية. وعرف هذا الحقل اقتحام باحثين من تخصصات مختلفة كالانثروبولوجيا والعلوم السياسية وعلم الاجتماع... بعدما اقتصرت الدراسات الاستشراقية الكلاسيكية على علماء اللغة فقط الفيلولوجيين، غير أن المستشرقون الجدد وقعوا في نفس المأزق المنهجي والمعرفي الذي وقع فيه أسلافهم وهو الوقوع في فخ التحيز والذاتية وتحول الاستشراق من علم إلى ايدلوجيا فقد كان يخفي وراءه أهداف إمبريالية واستعمارية وهو ما كشفت عنه حربي أفغانستان 2002 والعراق 2003.
