Overview
This article addresses the issue of pollution in urban and suburban areas of the medieval Muslim West. Based on text-evidence, this article determines the conditions considered in the founding of cities, to show the negative impact of urban activities on the environment and enhance the legal action plans taken by officials (advice, bans, punishments) to fight against air and water pollution and the ground-rooted actions conducted to improve life in urban centers: wastes' cleaning, hospices facilities of contagious diseases and polluting industries outside the walls, as well the installation of hydraulic systems (Fez, a case study) for supplying fresh drinking water to homes and institutions and waste disposal and creation of gardens intra- and extramural, which, in addition, to the production of vegetables and fruits, served recreational places in Spring and resort places for people seeking to escape the scorching heat in Summer.
