يدور موضوع هذه الدراسة حول السياسة الروسية تجاه جمهوريات آسيا الوسطى، حيث تسعى روسيا منذ بداية الألفية الثالثة إلى تبني استراتيجية بهدف استرجاع سيطرتها على هذه الجمهوريات المستقلة عن الاتحاد السوفيتي، باعتبارها تدخل ضمن المجال الجيوسياسي الروسي، وبالتالي هي منطقة مهمة لضمان مصالح الأمن القومي الروسي. وبناء على ذلك فإن الهدف من هذه الدراسة يتمحور حول فكرة أساسية، وهي كيف يمكن لروسيا الاتحادية أن تستعيد سيطرتها على الجمهوريات المستقلة في آسيا الوسطى، في ظل التحديات الداخلية وطموحات القوى الإقليمية والدولية في هذا المجال الجيوسياسي الهام، وكيف يمكن توظيف القدرات الروسية في خلق مجال جيوسياسي آمن بالنسبة لها.
