نحاول من خلال هذا البحث التركيز على مسألة أساسية وهامة في المنطق القديم هي نظرية التعريف عند أرسطو، حيث أننا نتناول فيه التعريف عند أرسطو بشكل مفصل ودقيق. ونحاول أن نبين ما إذا كان التعريف عنده تعريف للشيء أم تعريف لاسمه، وهل التعريف عنده للأنواع أم للأفراد أي هل يتناول المدرك الكلي أم الفرد الواحد الجزئي، وهل يدل على ماهية الشيء أم أنه يقتصر على ذكر خواص هذا الشيء. ونحاول أن نبين موقفه من الكليات وهل لها وجود في الخارج أم أنها مجرد أسماء لا وجود لها خارج الأذهان.
