Overview
روسيا واليابان جارتان، لكن غالبا ما يتم وصف علاقاتهما على أنها وثيقة جغرافيا وبعيدة سياسيا، ومشكلة جزر الكوريل من القضايا الصعبة التي تمنع روسيا واليابان من تحسين علاقاتهما، لذلك سيبقى أبرام إي معاهدة صداقة مهمة شاقة، وحل الخلاف سيكون من الضروري لكل من الطرفين إيجاد حل وسط ومقبول وبواسطة طرف دولي نزيه ومقبول من طرفي النزاع، حتى يمكن التعويل عليه في إيجاد الضمانات السياسية لكلا الطرفين، والمصالح الاقتصادية والسياسية وحتى العسكرية تدفع كل الأطراف نحو صيغة توافقية من الحل، والجغرافية السياسية تسهم بالجزء الأكبر من تذويب الخلاف وإبراز المصالح، لذلك سيكون دورها فعال في هذا الصراع.
