تتناول هذه الورقة تاريخ نشأة المتاحف والمراحل التي مرت بها، والأهمية التاريخية لها، بالإضافة إلى الأهداف التي أنشئت من أجلها، إضافة إلى أنواع المتاحف التي انتشرت في مختلف بلدان العالم، فقد مرت فكرة إنشاء المتاحف بعدد من المراحل منذ العصر الروماني وحتى التاريخ الحديث، كما أنها تنوعت وفقا للعرض الذي تقدمه للجمهور، حيث نشأت متاحف متخصصة في مختلف المجالات. كما تناولت الورقة مراحل إنشاء المتاحف في السودان والأقاليم السودانية التي أنشئت فيها متاحف لأغراض متعددة.
