Overview
Weeds have a great effect on crop production. Therefore, with the objective of evaluating different methods of weeding in sunflower, a field experiment was carried out at Rahad Research Station Farm during summer season 2019/ 2020 with the objective of evaluating different methods of weeding in sunflower. A randomized complete block design with three replicates was used. Results showed highly significant differences (p= 0.01) among treatments in plant height. The highest plant height (143.1 cm) was obtained by chemical weeding plus supplementary hand weeding. Treatments had no significant effect on plant density either before or after application of weeding treatments. Treatments had highly significant effects on yield. The highest yield was recorded by manual weeding (1916 kg/ ha), whereas the lowest yield was obtained by the un-weeded treatment (408 kg/ ha). Chemical plus supplementary hand weeding treatment gave weeding efficiency of 93% followed by mechanical weeding plus supplementary hand weeding (90%) and manual weeding (89%) at four weeks after sowing. However, at eight weeks after sowing, manual weeding gave 86% weeding efficiency. The lowest weeding efficiency was obtained by mechanical weeding (54%). There was highly significant difference in the dry weight of weeds. The highest dry weight of weeds was obtained from the un-weeded treatment (2287.5 g/ m2). The highest ridge height after weeding was recorded by green ridging and mechanical weeding (18.86 and 18.12 cm, respectively). The lowest ridge height after weeding was recorded by manual weeding (10.47 cm). The study recommended that to control weeds in the Rahad Scheme by mechanical weeding plus supplementary hand weeding or chemical weeding plus supplementary hand weeding or green ridging plus supplementary hand weeding.
