Overview
This study investigates the reasons behind low achievement in English language learning among nursing students in Kuwait, providing an assessment-based analysis of the academic, pedagogical, environmental, and psychological factors influencing their performance. The research is based on the assumption that weak English proficiency constitutes a major barrier to nursing students' academic and professional competence, given that most medical and clinical resources are available in English. A descriptive analytical methodology was adopted, involving questionnaires and interviews with 100 nursing students and 15 English instructors from public nursing institutes. The instruments focused on several dimensions, including teaching methods, student motivation, difficulty of medical terminology, language practice opportunities, and the quality of the learning environment. The results identified the main causes of poor achievement as overreliance on translation-based instruction rather than communicative approaches, low motivation to learn English, and limited opportunities for practical language use inside and outside the classroom. Additional contributing factors included curriculum overload and insufficient time allocation for language skill development, as well as students' weak linguistic background prior to enrollment. Faculty members also emphasized the absence of extracurricular language support as a key limitation. The study concludes that improving English proficiency among nursing students requires a comprehensive curriculum review, the adoption of content-based communicative strategies that integrate medical contexts, and the use of interactive digital learning tools. It recommends establishing specialized language support centers within nursing institutions to help students achieve the linguistic and professional competence necessary for their field.
