يعتبر مفهوم المجتمع المدني أساساً للحياة الديمقراطية والتشاركية في مختلف المجتمعات، يشير هذا المفهوم إلى الهيكل الاجتماعي والسياسي الذي يضم المؤسسات والمنظمات غير الحكومية والأفراد الذين يسعون لتحقيق الصالح العام والتأثير في صنع القرارات، تطور هذا المفهوم عبر التاريخ بتأثير المدارس الفكرية والفلسفية منها الفلسفة الغربية والفلسفة الحديثة بالإضافة إلى الفلسفة العربية والإسلامية، يتناول المقال تطور هذا المفهوم في ضوء هذه المدارس الفلسفية.
